Planning

Planning in ISO 14001 means identifying which environmental aspects the activity generates, which are significant, and which legal requirements apply to each.

Content reviewed on

Environmental aspects

Identifying the environmental aspects of activities, products and services the organization can control or influence, and determining which have or could have a significant environmental impact, under normal, abnormal and emergency conditions.

Identifying applicable legal requirements and other requirements —voluntary commitments, customer demands— and determining how they apply to the organization's environmental aspects.

Environmental objectives and planning

Objectives consistent with the policy, measurable where practicable, with an action plan: what will be done, with what resources, who is responsible, and how results will be evaluated.

What an auditor usually asks for

  • An aspects-and-impacts matrix with calculated significance
  • A legal requirements register with validity and compliance evaluation
  • Environmental objectives with an indicator, an owner and a date
  • An action plan for each objective with regular monitoring

How to cover planning in Kimobox

  1. 1Log each process's environmental aspects with its significance-scoring method.
  2. 2Keep the legal requirements register with validity alerts and periodic review.
  3. 3Define environmental objectives with an indicator and let the system track them.

The legal requirements register warns you before a review lapses, instead of finding out at the audit.
