IATF 16949 templates and records

Nine records that IATF 16949 adds to ISO 9001 in the automotive industry, with the clause that calls for each, the industry manuals customers usually require and a completed example.

In one sentence

IATF 16949 sits on top of ISO 9001 and adds records specific to the sector: customer-specific requirements, the contingency plan, process FMEA, the control plan, part approval (PPAP), measurement systems analysis, capability studies, process audits and problem solving; the standard sets what must be demonstrated and leaves the method to the customer’s requirements, which in practice point to the AIAG and VDA manuals.

Frequently asked questions

What people ask us before getting started

Are the AIAG manuals mandatory?

Not under the standard. IATF 16949 requires the methods the customer asks for, and most manufacturers refer to the AIAG or VDA manuals in their customer-specific requirements. If a customer does not specify one, the organisation may choose its method as long as it fulfils the purpose of the clause.

Do they replace the ISO 9001 records?

No, they come on top. An IATF plant still needs nonconformity reports, internal audits, management review and supplier evaluation; this section covers only the records the automotive industry adds.

Where can each customer’s specific requirements be found?

Each manufacturer publishes its own, and many are collected on the IATF Global Oversight website. They change often, so it is wise to review them at a fixed interval.
