ADR driver training record for SQAS
The ADR certificate is the legal minimum. SQAS also asks about the training the company gives itself: specific products, loading and unloading at each customer, protective equipment and emergency response.
In one sentence
The ADR driver training record holds, for each driver, the ADR training certificate and its expiry, security training, the company’s own training on products, loading, unloading and emergencies, and each customer’s training where they require it, because the ADR makes training compulsory for drivers (8.2) and for all staff involved (1.3), and SQAS rewards, in its human resources area and in Transport Service, in-house training that goes beyond that minimum.
- Type of information
- Mandatory record ADR obligation (1.3 and 8.2); SQAS assesses it in the Core and in Transport Service
- Who fills it in
- Transport manager and human resources With the safety adviser for the dangerous goods content
- When
- Before driving alone And at each certificate renewal, change of product or new customer with its own procedures
- How long it is kept
- At least the assessment cycle SQAS sets no retention periods; the report is valid for three years and the assessor reviews the evidence for that period. Where a legal period applies, such as those in the ADR, that one prevails.
What the standard requires
What SQAS2022 demands and what it leaves to your judgement
Drivers of vehicles carrying dangerous goods must hold a training certificate issued by the competent authority, valid for five years and renewable by passing a refresher course and an examination in the year before it expires (8.2.2.8.2).
In addition, everyone whose duties affect the carriage of dangerous goods must receive training suited to their responsibilities, and records of that training are kept by both employer and employee (1.3). The ADR also requires security awareness training (1.10.2).
SQAS goes beyond the certificate: it asks about an in-house training plan, initial training before driving alone, training on customers’ products and loading and unloading procedures, the use of protective equipment and how that training is evaluated.

At the audit
Mistakes auditors commonly flag
- Only a copy of the ADR certificate is on file: no in-house training is recorded.
- Expired certificates spotted by the assessor or at a roadside check.
- Subcontractors’ drivers with no evidence of training at all.
- Training on customer procedures that is not repeated when the customer changes them.
- Security awareness training has never been delivered.

- 4The training status of the whole driver workforce can be checked at a glance before the assessment.
Frequently asked questions
What people ask us before getting started
How long is a driver’s ADR certificate valid?
Five years. To renew it, the driver must pass a refresher course and an examination in the twelve months before it expires.
Is the ADR certificate enough for SQAS?
No. It is the minimum legal requirement. SQAS asks about the training the company itself provides on products, loading and unloading, protective equipment and emergencies, and how it checks that the training has worked.
Who keeps the training records?
Under the ADR, both employer and employee. The retention period is set by the competent authority; it is wise to keep them at least while the employee is with the company and for the validity of the SQAS report.
