FSSC 22000 food safety and quality culture objectives

FSSC requires senior management to set culture objectives within the system, with specific elements and a way of measuring them.

In one sentence

The FSSC 22000 food safety and quality culture objectives are senior management's documented commitment to a plan that addresses, as a minimum, communication, training, staff engagement and performance measurement, with objectives, deadlines and follow-up, integrated into the management system, as the additional requirements in clause 2.5.8 require.

What the standard requires

What FSSC 22000 demands and what it leaves to your judgement

FSSC requires senior management to establish, implement and maintain food safety and quality culture objectives within the management system, with a plan covering at least communication, training, staff engagement and feedback, and measurement of the performance of the activities.

The objectives follow the logic of ISO 22000 (6.2): measurable, with an owner, a deadline and follow-up, and reviewed by top management.

BRCGS requires a culture plan with a similar approach; its sheet includes an example of a baseline survey and shift-level activities.

Structure

Fields the template should include

At the audit

Mistakes auditors commonly flag

  • Culture objectives with no indicator.
  • Only a survey, with no activities responding to its results.
  • One of the minimum elements is missing, typically performance measurement.
  • The objectives never reach management review.
  • Staff interviewed are not aware of any activity.

How this record is kept in Kimobox

  1. 1Objectives are defined with indicators fed by real data: training completed, suggestions, incidents.
  2. 2Activities are managed as improvement actions with an owner and a date.
  3. 3Staff suggestions can come in from a mobile, with their follow-up.
  4. 4Progress flows into the pre-generated management review report.

Frequently asked questions

What people ask us before getting started

Which minimum elements does FSSC require?

Communication, training, staff engagement and feedback, and measurement of the performance of culture-related activities.

Is it the same as the BRCGS culture plan?

The aim is the same. FSSC frames it as objectives within the management system; BRCGS as a plan with activities and a timetable within senior management commitment.

Is a survey needed?

It is not mandatory, but it is the usual way of measuring staff perception. It can be combined with behavioural indicators.
