GMP+ HACCP hazard analysis for feed
The same HACCP method, applied to whatever could harm the animal and, through it, the consumer of meat, milk or eggs.
In one sentence
The GMP+ HACCP hazard analysis for feed identifies, by raw material and step, the hazards specific to animal feed — mycotoxins, dioxins and PCBs, heavy metals, pesticides, Salmonella, carry-over of additives or medicines, foreign bodies — assesses them and sets the control measures, as the scheme requires in GMP+ B1 and Regulation (EC) 183/2005 requires of feed business operators.
- Type of information
- Mandatory document System document required by GMP+ B1 and by Article 6 of Regulation (EC) 183/2005
- Who fills it in
- The company's HACCP team With knowledge of raw materials, process and feed legislation
- When
- At implementation and after changes New raw materials, process changes, alerts or new legal limits
- How long it is kept
- As set by the scheme and the law Regulation (EC) 183/2005 requires records that allow traceability, and the GMP+ documents set minimum retention periods: check them in the current version of the B document that applies to you.
What the standard requires
What GMP+ demands and what it leaves to your judgement
Regulation (EC) 183/2005 requires feed business operators other than primary producers to apply procedures based on HACCP principles. GMP+ develops that obligation and requires the analysis to cover all feeds and processes within scope.
GMP+ International publishes generic risk assessments of raw materials and processes, the Feed Support Products, which serve as a starting point. The company must adapt them to its own case, not simply copy them.
The method — team, flow diagram, hazards, CCPs, limits — is that of food HACCP, explained in that sheet; here we look at the hazards and references specific to feed.
Structure
Fields the template should include
- Feed or raw material and process step
- Hazard: chemical, biological, physical or carry-over
- Likelihood, severity and risk
- Reference to the GMP+ generic assessment, if used
- Control measure
- CCP or prerequisite control
- Applicable limit: legal, GMP+ or internal
- Review date
Example
Example: maize intake at a fictitious feed mill
Company, people and figures are fictitious: the example only shows what a properly completed record looks like.
| Field | Content |
|---|---|
| Step | Intake of bulk maize grain |
| Hazard | Aflatoxin B1 from damp storage at origin |
| Risk | Medium likelihood · high severity (carried into milk as aflatoxin M1) |
| Reference | GMP+ generic assessment for maize adapted to the sourcing origins |
| Measure | Certified supplier · rapid test per lorry during harvest · monthly laboratory analysis |
| Limit | Legal maximum level for feed materials under Directive 2002/32/EC and a stricter internal limit for dairy cattle feed |
| Control | CCP at intake for maize destined for dairy cattle |
At the audit
Mistakes auditors commonly flag
- A GMP+ generic assessment copied without adaptation.
- No consideration of carry-over between feeds with and without additives or medicines.
- Legal limits wrongly applied: the one for feed materials instead of the one for complete feed.
- The analysis is not reviewed after sector alerts.
- Sensitive species at the feed's destination not identified.
In Kimobox
How this record is kept in Kimobox
- 1Hazards are identified by process and raw material, with their risk assessment, within the HACCP plan itself.
- 2Limits are configured by feed and species, and analytical results are compared against them.
- 3An alert or a change of raw material opens a review of the analysis affected.
- 4Versions of the analysis are recorded with their approval.
Frequently asked questions
What people ask us before getting started
What are the Feed Support Products?
Generic risk assessments of raw materials and processes that GMP+ International makes available to certified companies. They are a basis for the company's own analysis, not a substitute for it.
Which hazards are specific to feed?
Mycotoxins, dioxins and PCBs, heavy metals, pesticides, Salmonella, residues of veterinary medicines and additives through carry-over, and foreign bodies. Some pass into food of animal origin.
Is HACCP mandatory in a feed mill?
Yes. Article 6 of Regulation (EC) 183/2005 requires it of feed business operators not engaged in primary production.
