GMP+ feed supplier approval
Under GMP+ the general rule is to buy from certified suppliers. Where they are not, the scheme only allows it under specific conditions.
In one sentence
Supplier approval under GMP+ checks that each supplier of feed materials, feed and services holds a GMP+ certificate or an equivalent one accepted by the scheme, or that one of the control protocols provided for purchases from uncertified suppliers is applied, as set out in the minimum purchasing requirements of document GMP+ BA10.
- Type of information
- Mandatory record Record required by GMP+ B1 and the minimum purchasing requirements in GMP+ BA10
- Who fills it in
- Purchasing with quality Quality checks the certificate scope and approves the supplier
- When
- Before the first purchase and at each renewal Certificate validity is checked continuously
- How long it is kept
- As set by the scheme and the law Regulation (EC) 183/2005 requires records that allow traceability, and the GMP+ documents set minimum retention periods: check them in the current version of the B document that applies to you.
What the standard requires
What GMP+ demands and what it leaves to your judgement
GMP+ requires products and services relevant to feed safety to be purchased from suppliers certified to GMP+ or to a scheme GMP+ accepts as equivalent, and the company to check that the certificate is valid and covers what it buys.
For some products and situations, the scheme allows purchases from uncertified suppliers through "gatekeeper" protocols, in which the purchasing company takes on additional controls — testing, audit, production conditions — and answers for them.
Besides the certificate, the company specifies what it buys and checks deliveries according to its hazard analysis.

At the audit
Mistakes auditors commonly flag
- A valid certificate whose scope does not cover the product purchased.
- Purchases from uncertified suppliers without applying any gatekeeper protocol.
- Expired certificates with no purchasing block.
- Hauliers without a GMP+ B4 or equivalent certificate.
- No purchase specification.
In Kimobox
How this record is kept in Kimobox
- 1Each supplier has its own record in the supplier portal, with the certificate, its scope and its expiry date.
- 2The system warns before expiry and blocks the supplier if the certificate lapses.
- 3Intake checks and rejections feed the supplier's ongoing evaluation.
- 4Hauliers are approved like any other service provider.
Frequently asked questions
What people ask us before getting started
What is a gatekeeper protocol?
A set of conditions GMP+ lays down so that a certified company can buy from an uncertified supplier, with the company taking on additional controls itself. It only applies to the products and situations the scheme provides for.
Is any feed safety certificate acceptable?
Only those GMP+ accepts as equivalent. The list is published by the scheme and should be checked before approving the supplier.
Is transport approved too?
Yes. Feed transport is an activity with its own document, GMP+ B4, and the haulier must be certified or controlled.
