Module 8 of 8 · ISO 22000 · Clause 10

Improvement and updating of the system

The last clause closes both cycles: it corrects what fails, improves the system and updates it after every change in product, process or legislation.

Nonconformity and corrective action (10.1)

When a system nonconformity occurs, you react, analyse the cause, consider whether it could recur elsewhere, apply the action and review its effectiveness. Evidence of its nature, the actions and their results is retained. Product deviations at CCPs and OPRPs are handled separately under 8.9.

Continual improvement (10.2)

Top management improves the suitability, adequacy and effectiveness of the system based on communication, management review, audits, analysis of verification results, validation and corrective actions.

Update of the system (10.3)

The food safety team evaluates the system at planned intervals and decides whether the hazard analysis, the control plan or the PRPs need revising. Updates are based on internal and external communication, information on the suitability of the system and verification results, and are reported as an input to management review.

What an auditor usually asks for

  • System nonconformities with root cause and verification of effectiveness
  • Separation between product deviations (8.9) and system nonconformities (10.1)
  • Planned evaluation of the system by the food safety team
  • Record of updates with their reason and their reporting to top management

How to cover improvement in Kimobox

  1. 1Open each nonconformity with a mandatory root cause and scheduled verification of effectiveness.
  2. 2Record updates to the hazard analysis and the plan with their version and reason.
  3. 3Feed the period's updates automatically into management review as an input.

A HACCP plan with the same review date for three years, in a plant that has changed its recipes, is an update that never happened.
