GMP+ feed sampling and analysis plan
A plan based on the hazard analysis that decides what is tested, how often and against which limit, and that is actually carried out.
In one sentence
The GMP+ sampling and analysis plan sets, on the basis of the hazard analysis, which feed materials and feeds are sampled, which contaminants are tested, how often and by which method, and against which limits — legal ones and the scheme's own in GMP+ BA1 — and records the results and their follow-up, as GMP+ B1 and the scheme's minimum requirements for sampling and analysis require.
- Type of information
- Mandatory record Plan and results required by GMP+ B1, with the limits in GMP+ BA1 and Directive 2002/32/EC
- Who fills it in
- Quality With a competent in-house or external laboratory
- When
- At the frequency in the plan Annual review and in response to alerts, changes of origin or abnormal results
- How long it is kept
- As set by the scheme and the law Regulation (EC) 183/2005 requires records that allow traceability, and the GMP+ documents set minimum retention periods: check them in the current version of the B document that applies to you.
What the standard requires
What GMP+ demands and what it leaves to your judgement
GMP+ requires a risk-based monitoring plan that verifies that control measures work and that products meet the limits. Sampling and analysis must be carried out with suitable methods and laboratories, in line with the scheme's minimum requirements.
The limits are the legal ones — Directive 2002/32/EC for undesirable substances — and the specific feed safety limits GMP+ publishes in its BA1 document, sometimes stricter or for unregulated substances.
A result that exceeds a limit triggers handling of nonconforming product and, where appropriate, notification to the early warning system.
Structure
Fields the template should include
- Product or feed material
- Contaminant or parameter
- Frequency and risk criterion
- Sampling method and laboratory
- Legal, GMP+ or internal limit
- Result, date and batch
- Action if the limit is exceeded
- Degree of plan completion
Example
Example: annual plan at a fictitious feed mill
Company, people and figures are fictitious: the example only shows what a properly completed record looks like.
| Field | Content |
|---|---|
| Maize | Aflatoxin B1 · monthly and per lorry during harvest · legal limit and internal limit for dairy cattle |
| Soya meal | Salmonella · every 10 batches |
| Minerals | Dioxins and heavy metals · six-monthly |
| Poultry withdrawal feed | Coccidiostats · quarterly (carry-over verification) |
| Completion at September | 94 analyses planned · 91 carried out · 3 postponed for lack of sample |
| Results | 1 aflatoxin result above the internal limit and within the legal one · batch diverted to finishing feed |
At the audit
Mistakes auditors commonly flag
- A plan copied from year to year with no link to the hazard analysis.
- Planned analyses that are not done and not justified.
- BA1 limits not taken into account.
- Out-of-limit results with no handling of the product.
- Laboratories without accredited competence for the analysis.
In Kimobox
How this record is kept in Kimobox
- 1The sampling plan is scheduled by product and contaminant, with a reminder for each pending sample.
- 2Laboratory results are recorded against their limit and linked to the batch.
- 3An out-of-limit result opens a nonconformity and blocks the batch.
- 4The degree of plan completion shows in an indicator calculated from the real data.
Frequently asked questions
What people ask us before getting started
What is GMP+ BA1?
The scheme document setting out specific feed safety limits. It complements the legal limits and is mandatory for certified companies.
How often should testing take place?
The hazard analysis decides: more for high-risk feed materials, new origins or difficult harvests, less for stable products. The plan must justify the frequencies.
Is the supplier's analysis acceptable?
It can form part of the plan, especially if the supplier is certified, but the company must have its own verification proportionate to the risk.
